Ingredients

4 medium apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

1 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick)

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

3/4 cup brown sugar, packed

1/4 cup milk

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Prepare the Apples: In a bowl, mix the sliced apples with cinnamon, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, and a pinch of salt. Set aside to let the juices release.

Make the Caramel Sauce: In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add brown sugar and stir until fully dissolved. Let it bubble for about 2 minutes, then remove from heat. Pour the caramel mixture evenly into the bottom of a greased 9-inch round cake pan.

Arrange the Apples: Layer the cinnamon-coated apple slices neatly over the caramel in the cake pan. Set aside.

Mix the Cake Batter: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the remaining 3/4 cup of granulated sugar, flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In a separate bowl, combine milk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined.

Combine: Gently pour the cake batter over the arranged apples in the pan, spreading it evenly with a spatula.

Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the cake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean from the center.

Cool and Invert: Once baked, let the cake cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Carefully run a knife around the edges, then place a serving plate on top and invert the pan to release the cake. Shake gently if needed to release the caramel apple layer.

Serve: Allow the cake to cool slightly before slicing. Enjoy warm or at room temperature, optionally topped with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for an extra treat.
