Preheating your oven is a crucial step in achieving the perfect texture for your Green Chili Chicken Tater Tots. An oven that reaches the right temperature ensures that the tater tots become crispy on the outside while remaining soft and fluffy on the inside. Aim to preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). This high temperature allows the outer layer of the tater tots to crisp up beautifully, providing a delightful contrast to the savory filling that awaits inside. Don’t skip this step; a well-preheated oven is essential for cooking success!

Ingredients

2 cups frozen tater tots

1 cup cooked shredded chicken (preferably rotisserie)

1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese

1 cup green chilies (canned or roasted and chopped)

1/2 cup sour cream

1/4 cup green onions, sliced (plus extra for garnish)

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon cumin

Salt and pepper to taste

Cooking spray or olive oil for baking

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Arrange the oven rack in the middle position.

Prepare Tater Tots: Spread the frozen tater tots evenly on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or greased with cooking spray. Bake them in the preheated oven for 20 minutes or until they are golden brown and crispy. Flip them halfway through cooking for even browning.

Mix Filling: In a large bowl, combine the cooked shredded chicken, green chilies, shredded cheese, sour cream, sliced green onions, garlic powder, onion powder, and cumin. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly combined. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Stuff Tater Tots: Once the tater tots are cooked, remove them from the oven. Using a small spoon or your fingertips, carefully make a small indentation in the top of each tater tot. Spoon a generous amount of the chicken mixture into each indentation, filling them to the brim.

Bake Again: Return the stuffed tater tots to the oven and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven, and let cool for a minute. Sprinkle with extra sliced green onions for garnish. Serve hot with sour cream or your favorite dipping sauce on the side.
